Take care

Aftercare and the healing process

Supplies: unscented, gentle, liquid soap (ex. Gentile face wash, antibacterial hand soap), ointment or lotion (zinc free), clean hands

Most important: less ointment is better always

***If using “second skin” leave it on for up to 5 days unless sensitivity occurs then proceed with instructions below (you will not need to be as rigorous in your care as “second skin” turbo boosts healing)

  1. Leave dressing placed by your artist for a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of 6 hours

  2. Remove dressing, wash your hands, and cleanse your tattoo using a gentle UNSCENTED soap with your clean fingers

  3. Let tattoo air dry

  4. Apply a THIN layer of ointment using clean fingers to your tattoo. Gently work the ointment into your tattooed skin. Using a minimal amount of ointment at a time is CRUCIAL to proper healing.

  5. Repeat the cleansing and ointment process twice daily for 5 days. After this time you may switch to an unscented lotion if desired or use ointment as needed.

  6. Do not rebandage your tattoo, but wear thin or no clothing

Long term relationship

Once your tattoo is fully healed, your ink will “soften” as your skin grew a new layer on top of your tattoo. Lines tend to widen slightly over time. Skin tone, sun damage, age, and skin care all play a part in what to expect from your tattoos long term. HEALTHY SKIN makes for beautiful tattoos. One tip for healed tattoos is to exfoliate and then moisturize. This will allow more light to hit your skin and can make “dull” tattoos appear refreshed. Hydration, and a healthy diet also work wonders for your skin!

DO keep your healing tattoo out of the sun

DO keep your healing tattoo away from compromising and dirty situations (dusty, standing water, dirt etc.) Your tattoo is an open wound. Treat with care to avoid infection.

DO NOT pick or scratch at your healing tattoo

DO NOT let your dog lick your tattoo (or anyone else)

DO NOT go swimming, hot tubbing or in any way submerge your tattoo. Running shower water is ok.

Expect itching, swelling, and redness in the first few days. This will get better over the course of the week. If you have concerns, please ask your artist and she will give you council from there. It is always ok to ask!  For medical questions, seek advice from your doctor.

Everyone heals differently, but in general your tattoo will be fully healed in 2-3 weeks

***SECOND SKIN NOTE sensitivity sometimes occurs when using “second skin”. If you notice a rash or redness not directly surrounding your tattoo, you may be having a sensitivity to the wrap and should remove it. This reaction should go away but if you have any concerns please see your medical provider.
